The green man motif is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or renaissance, representing the cycle of growth being reborn each spring. The green man traditionally has a face of leaves yet can have many faces. Some speculate that the mythology surrounding the green man developed independently  in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history today.
